FOOD PANTRY

Proverbs 11:25 “A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.”

SEPTEMBER is Ramen Noodles Month!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Ramen (ラーメン, rāmen) is a Japanese noodle dish that originated in China. It is served in a meat- or fish-based broth, often flavored with soy sauce or miso, and uses toppings such as sliced pork (チャーシュー, chāshū),dried seaweed (海苔,nori),kamaboko, green onions, and occasionally corn.

Though Chinese in origin, it’s unclear what the word means —maybe hand-pulled noodles, old noodles, or even dredge up, because the cooking process involves immersing them in boiling water. Ramen noodles can be mixed with a variety of vegetables and meat for a quick, easy meal. Ramen noodles are also very affordable and this time of year, when sending college bound children out the door, a staple many moms and dads send along with their students to make sure they have a just-in-case meal on hand.

Last year Burke did an awesome job of filling up our Food Pantry Cart with Ramen. “How awesome?” you ask? Well, how about just over 500 packages!
SO, there’s a record to break! Can we do it? Yes, we can! Let’s fill our cart with Ramen!

the road home

Become a volunteer for our Road Home Project. We partner with Lakeview Lutheran to assist in the feeding and care of a few homeless families that are in the program getting the counseling, financial and emotional assistance to get back on their feet. These families are in the process of getting their own housing, but are in need of a place to stay for a few nights. Lakeview Lutheran houses these families, and we go there to feed them for 3 nights and help provide some time to talk, and play with the children. A very rewarding opportunity to help make a difference in someone's life...theirs, or yours.

For more information on the road home and it's programs visit www.trhome.org/home.cfm

You can sign up in the narthex or contact the Burke office at (608)244-8486 to help with the upcoming dates and shifts: September 5, 6 and 7 and November 28, 29, and 30.
The shifts available for each day are Dinner shift (5pm - 7pm), Entertainment shift (6pm - 8pm) and Overnight shift (8pm - 7am).
You may only volunteer for one day/shift. Whatever time you have to help is appreciated.

RED BARN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Red Barn is in need of new volunteers for Thursdays from 5-7:00pm every other week. The work is very rewarding and also fun. We assist customers, sort, price and display incoming donations. Please contact Kathy Lukens, if interested in giving this ministry a try!

Attention Gardeners!
Would you be interested in helping us start a Community Garden Program? We're discussing the possibility of using some of the land that God has given us as an opportunity to invite people in our neighborhood and community to come and have their own gardens. If you have experience and skills to help us set that up or are just interested, please contact Pastor Russ or Karen.

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF KITS

Each October, the BLCW sends over one hundred quilts, several layettes and school kits to Lutheran World Relief. This year we are adding health kits also. LWR then forwards these supplies to people in need around the world. We need your help to collect the following items by October 1. Thanks for your help!

School Kits The BLCW will place all items in a cloth bag. For each kit we need: one blunt scissor; one 12” metric ruler; six unsharpened pencils; one 2½ eraser; one pencil sharpener; box of 12-24 crayons

Layettes The BLCW will wrap all items in a baby blanket. Each layette needs: four cloth diapers; two safety pins; two wash cloths; two receiving blankets; one sweater; one bar Ivory soap

Health Kits All items should be new and in good condition. Wrap smaller items in the washcloth, wrap washcloth and remaining items in the towel and tie securely with ribbons or yarn. Needed for each kit: One dark hand towel; one dark washcloth; one bath-size bar of soap in its original wrapping; one
adult-size toothbrush in its original packaging; one sturdy comb; one metal nail file or nail clippers with file attached, remove packaging; six Band-Aids preferably ½” to ¾”, secured together with rubber ban
